Mystery shrouds the fate of medical supplies procured for CWG

First they were confused about whether they would be able to get it or not and now they are perplexed what to do with what they have got.

Doctors deployed at several Commonwealth Games venues are wrapping up work and also some consumable medical goods with it, like medicines, syringes and injections.

There are still no clear guidelines as to how perishable and non-perishable items will be disposed.
"They have been asking us to take the medicines to our respective hospitals. We already have surplus of these medicines in our hospitals, stuffing them in our stores would serve no purpose," said one of the doctors, posted at Major Dhyanchand Stadium.

Some of them also warned that if the authorities would not come up with a proper way to dispose off the left over medical supplies they may expire, causing financial loss.

However, some of the doctors are making the most of confusion and taking away the medicines and other supplies with them for personal use.u00a0

"I saw a doctor taking away some medicines with him. I told him clearly that unless a directive comes from the Directorate of Health Services we cannot allow anybody to take anything from here," said one of the venue managers in Delhi University.

The Other Side

Delhi Health Minister Dr Kiran Walia did not acknowledge that there was any confusion over the issue.
"We have made it very clear to the doctors and other medical staff that all the left-over stuff would either go to the respective hospitals or back to DHS," she told MiD DAY.

Equipment scam

MiD DAY had reported that one of the companies contracted to supply emergency medical equipment to 22 hospitals in the city, as preparation for the Commonwealth Games, did not even have a registered office. The other was already blacklisted at the time of bidding for the tender.
The two companies - Lord Krishna and Mangalam Medicaments - had backed out of their commitment to supply equipment ranging from stethoscopes and scoop stretcher to ultrasound machines.
Reportedly, these companies were under the scanner as they had allegedly secured the order for supplying the medical equipment for Commonwealth Games despite quoting exorbitant rates.
The medical apparatus was to be used for emergency services, including cardiac failure, injuries, various functions in the OPD and Operation Theatre.
