MiD DAY got a glimpse of Utsav's past, when it met his school friend Shahin Fatma, who resides in the Capital. Shahin claimed that she was very close to Utsav as he treated her as his sister and she tied 'rakhee' to him every year.u00a0u00a0

Talking about Utsav's first act of violence, Shahin said that the incident happened around 15 year ago when Utsav was a student of St John's school in Varanasi. "Neha also used to study in the same school and Utsav used to like her a lot.u00a0 Once he had some tiff with her and instead of ending the matter there, he thought of getting even with her. One day as Neha was returning to her home in a school bus, Utsav stood in the middle of the road and forced the driver to stop the bus.

As the bus stopped, he told the driver that he wanted to meet his girlfriend who was in the bus. Saying this, he boarded the bus and started attacking Neha. He was however soon overpowered by teachers in the bus who scolded and beat him for his act. When Utsav's father Sushil Kumar came to know of the incident, he got him admitted into another school in Varanasi," said she.

Shahin, who had been Utsav's neighbour in Varanasi,u00a0 said he was an innocent boy right from his childhood and after Neha's incident, she had never heard anything against him. "Gappu, as Utsav is calledu00a0 fondly, treated me as a sister. I have always seen him as a polite boy who could not harm anyone. He is a good dancer, painter and an actor too and has acted in several dramas. So when I heardu00a0 that he had attacked Talwar and Rathore, I was shocked," said Shahin.

The problem

Bipolar disorder or manic-depressive disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders defined by the presence of one or more episodes of abnormally elevated energy levels, cognition, and mood with depressive episodes. These episodes are usually separated by periods of "normal" mood; but, in some individuals, depression and mania may rapidly alternate, which is known as rapid cycling. Extreme manic episodes can sometimes lead to such psychotic symptoms as delusions and hallucinations.

A Patient?

On February 8 last year, Utsav had stabbed Rathore thrice in the face when he was coming out of Chandigarh district and sessions court. A year after this incident, Utsav attacked Rajesh Talwar in his face outside a court complex.
Utsav's lawyer claimed that he was patient of bipolar disorder and was undergoing treatment since 2007 under Dr. Ratna Bilwani, an eminent psychiatrist at Ahmedabad where he was also pursuing his master's degree in designing from National Institute of Design (NID). On Monday, Utsav's lawyer requested the court to grant him bail for his treatment. The chief judicial magistrate said he will decide on the plea only after he personally verifies Utsav's mental situation by talking to him.
