India's dependence on foreign weapons just might see an end in the years to come. On Saturday the Aeronautical Development Establishment in the city managed to successfully fly an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) -- the second of its kind in India.

Eagle eye: The SUV can go steady at a height of 25,000 feet anywhere between 12-15 hours

Unlike its older counterpart Nishanth, that can only endure an approximate 4-hour journey, Rustom can go steady at a height of 25,000 feet anywhere between 12-15 hours. Equipped with cameras and weapons, Rustom was built to spy on enemy combatants.

Rustom, which means warrior, took off from the Taneja Aerospace and Aviation (TAAL) airfield located in Hosur.
Director Ravi Kumar Gupta, Scientist 'G', and Director, Directorate of Public Interface, said, "We need to develop an indigenous system because we need what other countries have, without having to depend on them." He added, "Rustom's primary application will be for all armed forces."

Wing Commander CV Upadhyay (Retd), said, "It's a great development. I'm certain we'll improve on it and begin manufacturing our own weapons soon."

Air Marshall J S Gujral (Retd), said, "We still can't be sure how long they'll take to start producing it." He added, "This is a milestone, but it entirely depends on whether they will meet all the requirements of the armed forces."
