UK-based doctor had trouble getting a theft case registered with the Delhi police

How far would you go to get an FIR registered? Not to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) most probably. Well Sangeeta Sharma did. Reason: the UK-based doctor wished to get the report on a theft case filed at the Malviya Nagar police station, but the cops were allegedly uncooperative.

Sangeeta's husband, Dheeraj Bhardwaj, a computer scientist had been chosen a youth icon by a leading media group along with Karan Johar, Aishwarya Rai, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Omar Abdullah, in 2004. But Sangeeta says a man who has been praised by NASA for his contributions was not even shown common courtesy by the city cops.

The theft occurred a year ago. But Malviya Nagar police allegedly even refused to lodge an FIR claiming that no complainant was available. But the police had to lodge a case when Sangeeta approached the PMO.

The complainant had come to meet her brother, Vijay Anand Sharma who lives in D Block of Malviya Nagar. There she employed a domestic help through a placement agency.u00a0

The maid, named Asha Kumari alias Sima Kumari, allegedly disappeared with valuables from the home after a few days. Sangeeta approached the placement agency office and found that they too had shut shop. She then reported the matter to the Malviya Nagar police, asking them to lodge an FIR. But the cops were not in the mood.

Sangeeta then filed an RTI plea to find out why no FIR was lodged to which the Delhi Police replied saying no complainant was available. The complainant then approached the PM's office against the Delhi police.

"It is difficult to understand why Delhi police is unwilling to take action against the culprits. How can the police claim that the complainant was not available?" she asked in her letter to the PMO.

A police officer wishing anonymity said that they have registered an FIR a year after the incident took place and only when the victim approached the PM's office.

HC Slams Cop

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday rebuked a police inspector for deliberately not lodging a gangrape case despite repeated complaints by the victim. The court also dismissed the inspector's petition to get the FIR against him quashed.
Inspector Gurmeet Singh, who was the SHO of Gokulpuri police station when he refused to lodge an FIR even when the victim and her husband brought one of the accused to him in January 2005, was slapped with an FIR on the direction of a sessions judge for fabricating records to shield an offender. When Singh refused, a Special Executive Magistrate wrote several times to the police officials to pay heed to the victim's complaint. Subsequently, the FIR was lodged.
