Gurgaon traffic police launches drive against underage drivers

They have grown up on a staple diet of movies like Fast and Furious and Dhoom but the Vin Diesels and John Abrahams of the reel world operated on roads devoid of traffic cops.

However, that's not the case with Gurgaon. With the rising cases of underage driving in the millennium city, traffic cops are out to put the brakes on culprits. Eighteen tickets were issued on Monday alone.

"Parents are requested not to allow their children to drive vehicles if they do not have valid driving license. Action will also be taken against the owner of the vehicle which any underage driver is found to be driving under section 180 of the Motor Vehicle Act.

The offence is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to three months, or with fine which may extend to Rs 1,000, or with both," said Bharti Arora, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).
The traffic department has also issued letters to schools asking them to discourage students from driving. In the recent years many underage drivers have met with accidents.

"It is a dangerous trend and needs to be addressed urgently. This practice not only puts the life of the driver at risk, but also endangers others," she added.

Teams of officers have been posted at points from where maximum cases of underage driving have been reported.
