Water-logged spots at PL Deshpande Garden Chowk repaired recently, but puddles still form here and make it a breeding ground for mosquitoes
On Day 2 of Week 5 of MiD DAY monsoon campaign, our team reached the busy P L Deshpande Garden Chowk, which is close to the PMC Water Treatment Plant. The water-logged spots in this area have been repaired under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), but the problem is far from over.
A major problem is the paving work near the footpath of P L Deshpande Garden. The place sees a continuous flow of sewage and rainwater that blocks this 100-metre patch.
The problem is worse especially at the point near PMC's Parvati Water Treatment Plant, where a pool of water has collected on the road.u00a0
MiD DAY team along with PMC's Assistant Engineer B M Sonawane, JNNURM Sectional Engineer Bipin Shinde and Jr Engineer Gajanan Sharma supervisor surveyed the trouble-spots in this area that added to the woes of commuters and pedestrians.

Problem: The storm water drains are filled with muddy water and soil, and needs to be cleaned. Besides, some drains do not have grills and may cause serious accidents during night. A pedestrian can even fracture his leg if not careful.
PMC's promise: JJNURM Sectional Engineer Bipin Shinde promised they would construct a new 2.5 X 6-feet metal catch pit or metal cover for the drain. He also promised to clean the storm water chamber within 72 hours.

Problem: The pavement near the Pest Control Office and the water drainage chamber are not on the same level. Thus it causes flooding, as water is unable to flow into the drains. Heavy vehicles passing by squirt the muddy water that collects here on unsuspecting pedestrians walking on the footpath.
PMC's promise: This entire area is low-lying. The footpath and storm waters drains will be brought to the same level so that water flows into the drain easily, assured Shinde. "Or else, we will puncture the drains and ensure water goes in easily," he said.

Problem: The entrance of the plant has turned into a big pond. This has happened because tankers go in to the Water Treatment Plant for filling water. In addition, the MSEDCL has dug up the place for cabling work in the area. Mosquitoes breeding on the pond is a health threat for the residents staying nearby.
PMC's promise:u00a0 MSEDCL's Jr Engineer Dinesh Kongate said that the underground high tension cabling work was almost over. The work would take another 15 to 20 days, he said. PMC will also help us in patching up the low-lying area with useful material, said Sonawane, Assistant Engineer (Roads).
