Though the city police have done a commendable job by securing the arrest of People's Democratic Part (PDP) Chief Abdul Nasser Madani, they have a tough task ahead.

After an eight-day struggle, the city police managed to bring in Madani, but he will be admitted to either Bowring or Victoria Hospital wards, since Madani complained of several ailments.

So the police have not taken any chances, and have decided to keep him under medical observation during the interrogation.

Madani was brought to the city yesterday after Joint Police Commissioner Alok Kumar went to Kerala and held a series of discussions with senior police officials there.

Sources said that though the ruling party has taken the credit for the arrest, now the onus is on the police to connect him to the case.

Though Madani has been booked as one of the co-conspirators (from a total of 31 accused), no other conspirator has been convicted so far.

The city police, in an additional chargesheet, had said that T Nazeer, the prime accused, had held a meeting at Lakkeri estate in Madapur, Coorg, to plan jihadi activities with other accused.

However, records show that Madani had not visited the estate, as his every moment outside his hometown would have been recorded and submitted to the government by the B Category security personnel that were assigned to him.

But information available from the Kerala home department revealed that Madani had not visited Madapur.

Central Crime Branch investigators had also mentioned that Madani was in regular touch with the prime accused before and after the blasts where he had assured his full cooperation.

The police had also managed to gather the phone conversation and call details, but this would be very difficult to prove in the court of law as the defense will have ample opportunity to prove it otherwise.

Their only hope is to grill Madani and get his confession. This would be difficult since Madani will have to be handled cautiously due to his health condition, said the sources.
