Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati yesterday accused the opposition parties of instigating the agitation by farmers in Aligarh and Mathura, demanding higher compensation for their acquired land, for political gains and exploiting it for political gains

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati yesterday accused the opposition parties of instigating the agitation by farmers in Aligarh and Mathura, demanding higher compensation for their acquired land, for political gains and exploiting it for political gains.

She alleged the refusal of Congress-led UPA to take an initiative to amend the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 was responsible for disputes and violent incidents on the issue of land acquisition in different parts of the country, including Uttar Pradesh.

She charged opposition parties were exploiting the farmers' agitation issue for their political gains and they have no other work but to instigate the farmers. "It is most unfortunate that the central government led by Congress is still following the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 even 63 years of independence when it should have amended it to safeguard the interests of farmers."
