Following communal violence in western Uttar Pradesh's Kasganj, the Yogi Adityanath government yesterday transferred the area Superintendent of Police Sunil Kumar Singh to Police Training School in Meerut, officials said. Piyush Srivastava was appointed as the new Kasganj SP, they added. Singh was sent to Police Training School, Meerut, in the same rank.

Kasganj witnessed communal violence last week and at least three shops, two buses and a car were torched after a youth was killed in clashes following stone-pelting by a mob on a motorcycle rally taken out to celebrate Republic Day. As many as 118 people were arrested and security forces maintained a strict vigil.

Governor reacts
In an embarrassment for the Uttar Pradesh government, Governor Ram Naik yesterday termed the communal clash as a "blot" on the state. "Whatever happened in Kasganj was not good. The incident there is a 'kalank' (blot) for UP. The government is probing the incident. It should initiate effective measures to ensure that such incidents are not repeated," he told reporters.
