Jazz lovers in Pune were awestruck as they got a rare treat in form of Pune Jaaz Utsav 09. The musical evening was organised on Sunday by the Pune Jazz Club and Ishanya Mall at the latter's amphitheatre in Yerwada where the bands The Jazz Junction, The Adrian D'souza Trio and Southern Quartet engrossed the crowd with their soulful compositions.
Acclaimed singer Shubha Mudgal who was also present at the event, addressed the audience, and was seen enjoying the music. The bands regaled the enthusiastic audience and a couple of salsa dancers present in the audience, on the spur of the moment, jumped on to the stage and did a jig for the crowd.
Vineeta Nigam, who was seen to be enjoying every bit of the performances, said that Pune has become a happening place as far as music is concerned. "I think now I can relate to jazz as a genre a bit more compellingly."
Ahmed Ebrahim, founder of Jazz Club in Pune, was thrilled to see the 700-strong audience that turned up at the venue. "It had surpassed our expectations and we had to even turn away some people," Ebrahim said. He added that through the Jazz Club, they intend to Pune on the Jazz map.
The Jazz International Festival attracts music artistes from India and across the globe while the Jazz Utsav is a three-day affair, which is being held every year in Mumbai and Delhi. However, this time around, even Pune has been added in the list with this particular event. Although, the event was held for a day next time, the prganisers plan to hold it across three days in November 2009.
