Delhi gangrape victim on ventilator, organs damaged

Describing the incident as "one of the most tragic incidents" that they had ever seen, the doctors said the victim's badly damaged intestine was susceptible to gangrene and had to be removed.

Doctors at the Safdarjung hospital performed an elective abdominal surgery - gastronomy and duodenustromy - and surgeons had to remove her gangrenous small intestine. They said she has lost most of her intestine.

"This was a planned surgery and at this juncture she is responding to treatment fairly well, she is stable but she continues to be critical," said Dr BD Athani, medical superintendent of the hospital.

The doctor said the woman was admitted to the ICU and was on ventilator. Her blood pressure and platelet levels were unstable. Her condition had "slightly deteriorated" on Tuesday.u00a0
