To have agents barge into your house to recover a loan you took is understandable, but to be harassed for a loan you never took is simply not done. Dr Anuradha Shah, a dentist, and her architect husband Upendra are one couple who are having a traumatic time for no fault of theirs.

The incident
Since April, the Shahs have been harassed by recovery agents who claim they are defaulters for a loan they took from Dena Bank. On July 22, they got the shock of their life when they answered the doorbell. "At around 5.30 pm that day, six people and a gunman entered our flat at Shri Adinath Sahakari Gruharachana and asked us to vacate it. They demanded its possession without having the necessary court order," said Anuradha. The couple then registered a complaint at Swargate police station and one with the Reserve Bank of India.

"It is shocking that the Swargate police is yet to lodge our complaint, simply because we could not produce any formal evidence. The truth is, we are neither borrowers nor guarantors of any Dena Bank loan," she said.

Added Upendra, "I completed all formalities regarding the clearance of the flat before purchasing it last year."

Previous occupant
According to Upendra, the bank ordered the issue against one Tejas Masalia who resided in the flat before them. "Masalia cannot be traced, but bank officials are not ready to confirm anything for us," he said.

Swargate police station is under the jurisdiction of ACP Abhay Yevle, Zone II, who said he has no clue about the case, but promised to look into the matter.
