The incident was reported on Thursday at around 11 am in Sector 5 area of Gurgaon. The constable is identified as Satish and is attached to a PCR in Connaught Place. He was on seven days leave.

"At around 11am a man in police uniform came to my shop and identified himself as Ramveer Singh, posted as constable at sector 5 police station. He asked me to show few rings for his wife. He chose one of the rings and said he will pay later. But when he was leaving the shop I saw that his bike doesn't have any registration no. Which made me suspicious and I called the police," said Ram Kumar, the shop owner and complainant.

The Gurgaon police have informed their counterparts in Delhi about the arrest of constable. He has been booked under sections 379 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigations are on in the case.

The Delhi police confirmed receiving the information but they refused to reveal the identity of the constable.

"We are verifying the story on our side. If he would be found guilty, the constable would not be spared. We are waiting for the chance to question him," said a senior Delhi police officer.

First among equals

A man accused of posing as Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer and cheating people was arrested in Delhi recently. Sanjeev Gill, 45, was arrested from central Delhi on a complaint of Nagendra Singh, a resident of Uttarakhand.

According to police, Gill used to pose as a CBI officer and used to target people who were new to the city. 'He used to target these people right from the railway station and bus terminals and used to take away their valuable items while posing as a CBI officer,' said police. Singh arrived in Delhi Wednesday to purchase some machinery parts. While he was waiting for the shop to get open, he was approached by three men posing as CBI officers, who searched him as well as his belongings.

"The trio took out from his possession five currency notes of Rs.500 denomination and noted their serial numbers.

They then returned these notes after wrapping these in paper and left. Suspecting something fishy, Singh checked the paper in which the notes were wrapped and found the money missing," said police.

Gill has admitted that his gang used to cheat people who used to visit Delhi on business.
