Clashes broke out between police and locals in Siliguri's Janta Nagar area on Sunday after the latter held a protest in connection with rape and murder case of a nine-year-old girl. Five policemen were injured in the clash, a police official said.
The incident took place when the protesters, including the victim's relatives, demanding strict punishment for the arrested accused, reportedly turned violent. Unable to control the crowd, the police resorted to lathicharge, which made the situation worse.
The situation is under control at the moment and police deployment has been beefed up following the incident, said the official. A landlord's son has been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place on January 25. The police have also arrested 12 people involved in the clash.
