RJ Prithvi tells you why he thinks it's time we had a national dish

India has a national animal, a national bird, a national flower, but hey what about something that all Indians love? Rakesh and I wondered why is it that we don't have a national dish! And we don't mean dishy women we are referring to food.

So we decided to bring this up on our show, Bengalooru Fatafat (Every morning between 7 and 11 on 94.3 Radio One). We asked listeners to vote for a national dish. We had varied responses ranging from paani puri, chithranna, chicken tikka, idli-sambar, chappati-sabzi, ragi mudde and so on. Listeners also launched into lengthy explanations on their favourite foods.

We then decided to rope in Bengaluru's celebrity chef Abhijeet Saha, who started the conversation wondering why the peacock was our national bird when it should clearly be chicken as it is relished across our country!

Abhijeet then went on to extol the virtues of a superb culinary creation the Biryani! This is one dish that is made by people from every state and enjoyed by all. After all the mouthwatering talk on biryani, one of our listeners took the cake (not the biryani) by voting for biryani as well. When we asked her to explain she said that it truly represented India as according to her the rice used in the biryani represents the population of India, the vegetables used, are grown in different parts of India, the different spices symbolise the diverse flavours of India, making it a truly Indian dish relished by all. So next time you dig into your biryani, think about Rakesh and me!
