Vishrantwadi police officials file FIR after making the complainant, who was allegedly assaulted by her husband, wait for six hours

Seema Lanke's long wait to file an FIR came to an end only after waiting at the Vishrantwadi police station for almost six hours. The FIR was finally registered against her husband Nanbhau Shankar Lanke alias Prakash, his ex-wife Deepali and his 12-year-old son from his previous marriage.

Seema had filed a written application with the Vishrantwadi police station against her husband for assaulting her regularly. He had allegedly beaten her and carved his name on her arm using a pocketknife. His ex-wife and his son from his previous marriage also allegedly helped him.

Seema told MiD DAY, "The police officials initially asked us to come on Wednesday to register a complaint. It was disturbing, as we had come such a long way from our village just to register a police complaint."

Seema said the police have registered a complaint against the trio under Sections 324, 342, 406, 494, 504, 506(1) and 34 of the IPC for causing hurt, wrongful confinement, breach of trust, bigamy, breach of peace, use of vulgar language, criminal intimidation, and criminal conspiracy.

Lenient charges
Some activists feel that the charges slapped against the trio are not stringent enough. "The police have lost their sensitivity. They should have applied stringent sections of the IPC, such as 307 for attempt to murder, and 326 for causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons and means. It is shocking that they have ignored the motive behind this gruesome act," said Advocate Supriya Kothari of Bhaghini Helpline. "The person attacked the woman with an intention to kill her. He has also inflicted injuries all over her body 15 times. This reflects a cold-blooded attitude."

Commenting on the delay in filing the FIR, Kothari said, "It is sad that despite Commissioner Meeran Chadhdha Borwankar's initiative for free registration of complaints, police officials are yet to take their superior's orders seriously. It is sad that the victim had to come again and again for her complaint to be registered."

Injuries simple
DCP Sanjay Jadhav (Zone IV) said, "According to Sassoon hospital's medical report, the nature of injuries was simple. Hence, a case of attempt to murder cannot be applied here. The suspects will be arrested soon."
