In a first, the Western Railway (WR) ran a goods train piloted by an all-women crew from Vasai Road to Vadodara on Tuesday.
"It was a memorable day for Western Railway. I applaud the determination and willpower of our women staff," said Alok Kansal, general manager, WR.
The train was helmed by loco pilot Kumkum Suraj Dongre, assistant loco pilot Udita Verma and goods guard Akansha Rai, said Sumit Thakur, chief public relations officer, WR.
"As this is a grueling job and involves travelling long distances, very few women come forward to join these posts. This move is a game changer and an inspiration for other women," added Thakur.
