Covid-19 vaccination: NMMC takes jabs to old and fragile at care homes

The Navi Mumbai civic body launched a special vaccination drive for the inmates and caretakers of care centres in a bid to curb the Covid-19 spread. Recently, the NMMC had started the immunisation of students seeking education abroad.

On Wednesday, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) kicked off the program for old age homes and care centres, and vaccinated 109 women at Prem Daan in Airoli. The centre is run by Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity for sick and dying destitute.

"During first Covid-19 wave, almost the entire centre was affected. But, with a focused approach we managed to avoid any casualty in this home," said an NMMC official.

The centre has women who have physical and mental disabilities. Some are even bedridden with comorbidity. Many of them are above the age of 60 years," the official added.

All the inmates were registered on the Co-WIN app and were vaccinated, in accordance with the new government guidelines for beneficiaries who don't have an Aadhaar ID. Nobody had any adverse reaction following the vaccination, officials said.

"We are planning such special drives for different sections of the society. In the current drive, we will vaccinate inmates in ashrams, old age homes and care centres. It is our duty to keep them safe during this pandemic," said NMMC Commissioner Abhijit Bangar.
