Making good on its long-standing threats, the Shiv Sena sounded the death knell on its alliance with the BJP. At the party's national executive meet this morning, the Shiv Sena passed a resolution to go solo in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly polls as well as Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

The decision is seen as a challenge to the BJP, the Sena's frenemy, who shot into prominence and formed the government at the Centre and state in 2014. The Sena has been part of the NDA for 29 years, and kept its association with the BJP intact at the Centre where it shares power. However, in the state assembly, the two parted ways ahead of the polls and joined hands later to form the government.

With anti-government sentiments growing, the Sena raked up the agrarian crisis, caste violence and the Marathi card at today's meet. The Sena is upset with the BJP's efforts of marginalising a long time partner and sees the next polls as an opportunity to amend its prospects. Political observers and members of the BJP and NCP, however, see this as an eyewash, and challenged the Sena to quit from the Centre.
