Shivaji Park residents have blamed tarpaulin sheets that continue to remain atop buildings in the area for a mosquito menace.
A prolonged monsoon and tarpaulin sheets over terraces and roofs have brought the mosquito menace back to Shivaji Park, with breeding grounds forming in the accumulated water on top of the plastic sheets, residents have claimed, a report in this paper said.
They added that this has increased chances of dengue spreading, forcing people to shut their home windows. Locals are pointing fingers at several flat owners for using tarpaulin sheets. The BMC says, as per the report, that it has addressed this problem earlier.
Shivaji Park residents now need to rope in housing societies of other buildings that have tarpaulin sheets to talk over and find a solution. Some residents are putting these sheets as they fear leakage in their homes. But the sheets should be emptied regularly or done away with. The Shivaji Park precinct, along with ward representatives, must join the BMC authorities in finding a way out, with a spirit of co-operation and amity.

To spark fights between buildings or non-co-operation from some is counterproductive. Mosquitoes are a menace to all, so it is keeping this in mind that this needs to be tackled. Meanwhile, it is important for all to look within. If there is water collected in different receptacles in your home, or if there is stagnant water somewhere in the building, you must address it with urgency. Keep mosquito repellents and sprays handy. Whereas, the BMC has to step up its fumigation measures, whenever it finds merit in a complaint. Absolute priority to cleanliness, outside flats and within building compounds, should be part of the strategy.
