MMRDA to soon build 4.98-km long bridge connecting Vasai and Bhayandar

The bridge will be constructed over the Bhayandar creek and is expected to be operational by September 2024

Motorists who often get stuck between Vasai and Bhayandar on Mumbai Ahmedabad highway will soon have a reason to smile. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will be constructing a six-lane bridge over the Bhayandar creek connecting Vasai west to Bhayandar west and is expected to be operational by September 2024.

The distance between Vasai west and Bhayandar west on Mumbai Ahmedabad highway is currently 30 km and the normal time required to cover this distance is about 45 minutes. But, during peak hours it takes around 60-90 minutes. However, once operational, the new bridge will cut the distance down to 5km and the travel time to less than 10 minutes.

According to an MMRDA official, "We will construct a 3+3 lane bridge connecting Vasai west from Bhayandar west. A new detailed report will be prepared considering future traffic congestion and M/s Stoop consultants have been appointed for the same. The bridge will be a part of the extended Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP)."

The bridge will be constructed over the Bhayandar creek with a length of 4.98 km and breadth of 30.60 metres. The estimated cost is pegged at Rs 1,501.16 crore.
The project has been in pipeline since 2013 and at the time the project cost was over R 300 crore.

However, the plan never took off and now the estimated cost has increased to over Rs 1500 crore. As per the plans, the bridge will run parallel to the railway bridge passing over Bhayandar creek and there would be exit points at Bhayandar, Naigaon and Panju.
