27.6-metre long trailer almost 10 metres more than the legal length was caught by RTO yesterday

It was quite a sight yesterday when a trailer-truck measuring 27.6 metres breaking the permitted length by almost 10 metres and making it India's longest truck was spotted by the flying squad of Mumbai's Regional Transport Office (RTO).

The trailer-truck bearing a Rajasthan number plate, with its 30 wheels, had been illegally modified to carry extra weight. It was moving down the Govandiu2013Mankhurd Link Road when it was spotted.

Towards the port

Investigations have revealed that the trailer was proceeding to the Mumbai port to ferry some consignment pertaining to the installation of a windmill that had been shipped into India.

Monster's Ball: The trailer impounded yesterday is 27.6-metre long. That's a little more than seven Asian elephants lined up. An average Asian elephant is around 3.5 metres in length.

"Enquiries point that the trailer has been registered with the RTO at Chittorgarh in Rajasthan, while its owner is a resident of Ahmedabad," said an RTO official.

Despite several attempts, the trailer's owner, Rajesh Rameshwar Jogi, remained unavailable for comment.

RTO Inspector Anandram Wagle, who was a part of the flying squad, said, "The trailer was around 10 metres extra in length, which is a total violation of registration rules."

Wagle and his team got the trailer to the RTO Central premises in Tardeo, giving the driver much trouble in reversing the vehicle down the narrow lanes of Mumbai Central and Tardeo.

The Rule Says...

According to Rule 93(3) of the Central Motor Vehicles Act, the length of the trailer cannot be more than 18 metres, while this trailer measured 27.6 metres.

Also, when no modifications are allowed, the trailer had been heavily modified to increase its carrying capacity without keeping safety aspects in mind.
