Worli resident furious after he finds bottle cap in his McChicken burger

McDonald's promises its customers a lip-smacking meal, but its McChicken burger almost cut Surjeet Duggal's mouth on Saturday night.

Duggal, a retired businessman temporarily living in Worli, had called for a home delivery of three Happy Meals from the McDonald's outlet at Phoenix Mills to celebrate the weekend with his five-year-old grandson Rahul.

But the celebration ended soon when Duggal who was digging into his burger found it hard to bite off and hence spat it out. When he opened the burger, he found a plastic bottle cap inside it.

"I examined the cap and realised that it was of a mayonnaise sauce bottle," said Duggal.

His wife was aggrievedu00a0 that a popular brand like McDonald's could be so careless in their service. She said, "We immediately called up the store to ask them how could they be so irresponsible.

Unhappy Meal: Rahul Duggal's grandfather Surjeet found a plastic bottle capu00a0in the McChicken burger he ordered home on Saturday night.

My grandson could have eaten that burger and choked on it. Who would have paid up if there was some damage caused by their mistake?"

Duggal claims that this is not the first time he's run into trouble with fast food joints. He had a similar experience with a pizza place.

"But the pizza company immediately compensated us. With McDonald's, I had a bad experience.

Neither did they come in person to investigate, nor did they apologise for the carelessness. They only offered to replace the meal," said Duggal.

The next time Duggal will be extra cautious about what he orders. For the time being, burgers are off his list, no matter how much his grandson craves for it.

The Other Side

Arvind Singhal, marketing director, McDonald's (western suburbs) said, "Very rarely do we get complaints about some foreign material in the food we serve.

Our first level of investigation is at the store itself, wherein we try and compensate by giving a free meal. If the customer is not satisfied, our hygiene team visits him with other suggestions to compensate.

In this case, it was a weekend and our corporate office was closed, so there was a delay in the response."

McNotorious

There have been several complaints against McDonald's worldwide, but the french fries lawsuit in the USA was one of the most famous ones.

On May 1, 2001, attorney Harish Bharti filed a suit alleging that McDonald's french fries and hash browns had beef in them and that the company had lied about it.

A $10 million (Rs 48 crore now) settlement was agreed upon in 2002, with $6 million (Rs 28 crore now) going to vegetarian groups.
