The Vile Parle Police on Thursday said that a suspect who had been allegedly involved in multiple cases of cheating senior citizens at city ATMs was arrested after a 67-year-old man filed a complaint with the police.
The police said, on December 31, 2022, the victim had filed a complaint with the police saying that he was allegedly duped of Rs 13,000 at a Vile Parle ATM when he had visited there to withdraw cash.
He told the police that the complainant told the police that the man who was present at the ATM witnessed him withdrawing the money and offered to help him. He took the ATM card from his hand and later asked for his pin, after the transaction was complete, the man made another transaction and withdrew Rs. 13,000 from his account and by the time the complainant could realize that another transaction was made, the man fled from the spot, the police said.

"On his complaint, an FIR under section 420 (cheating) was registered by the police which began to check the CCTV footage to get clues on the suspect," an official said.
The police learned that the suspect had been involved in similar cases previously and there were offences registered against him at different police stations in the city and the neighbouring areas. A team of police officials began to work on the technical clues and laid a trap for him at different ATMs in western suburbs for three days. He was finally nabbed on January 3, the police said.
The suspect was identified as Shatrughan Mahto, 32 who is a native of Bihar and has multiple cases of similar nature registered against him. The accomplice who is also a native of Bihar is being looked for, the police added.
