The play Court Martial tells the story of a young soldier who is convicted of murdering his senior officer. The intense trial opens up a can of worms about oppression in society by those in positions of power.
"The soldier in the story is humiliated by his superior because he is from a lower caste. It is a story about oppression by the powerful and how we reduce people to their social positions," explains Mohneesh Kalyan, director of the play who has recently moved to Mumbai.
Though the play written by Swadesh Deepak has been staged in different parts of the country, it is the first show of Kalyan's production in Mumbai. He dismisses any possibility of controversy by staging the play now.
"Oppression is universal. A story needs a medium to be told and in this play, it is told through the soldier. This story could be set in any context and the bottomline would remain the same. In fact, this mentality lies in all of us in the way we react to people who are weaker than us. I hope this play allows all of us to introspect," he shares.
