"Django Unchained" is a western film based on how a South American slave and bounty hunter travel together to kill their enemy. But the Lee says it has offended him.
"I can't speak on it because I am not going to see it ... All I am going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. That's just me ... I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else," Vibe magazine quoted Lee as saying.
Later, the filmmaker wrote on Twitter: "American slavery was not a Sergio Leone spaghetti western. It was a holocaust. My ancestors are slaves. Stolen from Africa. I will honour them."
The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christoph Waltz.
