Anurag Kashyap, who has co-written and produced Udaan, says the protagonist's life is quite similar to his own. Udaan is about a young boy Rohan who is abandoned by his parents in a boarding school for eight years. He comes back and is further bullied by his father and forced to work in a factory and study engineering when all he wants to do is become an actor. The film marks the directorial debut of Vikramaditya Motwane, the film's co-writer.
Meanwhile, the buzz in the industry is that Anurag has not yet paid Vikramaditya for his efforts. Vikramaditya had initially paid Anurag Rs 10,000 as a signing amount to write the script. When the film could not find buyers and finally Anurag decided to produce it, neither did he return the signing amount and nor did he pay Vikramaditya his director's fee.
